Quick tip for today.
I have a friend who is applying for Ph.D. positions at the moment. She’s very smart and hardworking.
Unfortunately, she got several rejections post-interviews, not knowing why.
When we talked, and I tried identifying the reason, I asked some things about her master’s thesis… and then I got it.
She was explaining it like she hated her work.
Like she couldn’t care about the results she got nor about the experiments she spent months working on.
Even though she did care,
her voice was monotonous,
her explanations dry and
she put no effort in explaining why the whole thing mattered.
I found no other reason she should get rejected, especially post-interviews.
Her CV is great, she’s got solid recommendations and her experience is relevant to what she’s applying.
She’ll be working on this aspect of her application now, hopefully with great results.
I wanted to share this with you, because you might be doing this as well, not realizing it.
If you truly don’t care about your research, then no big deal, you’ll find something else to do.
But if you do care, it’s a shame that the people you talk to get the wrong impression.
Good luck in your applications everyone,
Kenan
