This week I finished my first vacation as a Ph.D. student. I want to share with you that I had no idea how much I needed it.
I realized how much good it did to me only once I was back in the lab.
The same problems were waiting for me there. Same lab issues, same failed experiments, same paperwork that needed doing a couple of weeks ago.
But after only 2 weeks spent with my family and old friends, my cats and my wife, not thinking about the lab at all, I came back to all of it with a new energy.
One that you only have when you are just starting out.
That’s how it usually works, doesn’t it - it’s always exciting in the beginning, and the rest is learning to not despair and keeping the routine bearable.
But I didn’t realize you can have multiple beginnings, by simply allowing yourself to walk away for some time.
The two weeks allowed me to zoom out, forget about all the details, and remember why I wanted to do science in the first place.
I hope this message resonates with some of you and helps you take a vacation you needed for a long time.
P.S. I’m also back doing mentoring with students applying for internships and preparing for interviews, so see if you’d like to book a call in the upcoming weekends.
